Alphabet是Google成立的一個(gè)母公司，由 Larry Page 擔(dān)任CEO，Sergey Brin 擔(dān)任董事會(huì)主席。Alphabet下面會(huì)擁有一系列的按照業(yè)務(wù)線獨(dú)立出來(lái)的全資小公司。比如 現(xiàn)在的這個(gè)Google，X-Lab，Life Sciences，Ventures & Capital 和其他。

這次新公司的成立更加像是一次組織架構(gòu)的調(diào)整，用來(lái)修整之前相對(duì)臃腫的Google，另外能更加明確每個(gè)事業(yè)部（子公司）的職責(zé)和成績(jī)。

今天早上起來(lái)，我的Facebook news feed 被這個(gè)Alphabet刷屏了。各種灣區(qū)同事們對(duì)它發(fā)表看法以及分享了媒體上的報(bào)道。

我仔細(xì)讀了幾遍Google官方的解釋?zhuān)X(jué)得很有意思。Alphabet官網(wǎng)： https://abc.xyz/ ，頁(yè)面看起來(lái)非常簡(jiǎn)單，就是一篇博文：

這篇文章完整地介紹了 什么是 Alphabet，為什么要成立 Alphabet， Alphabet的組織結(jié)構(gòu)如何，以及今后它的發(fā)展方向是什么。我特定挑選了里面重要的幾段來(lái)解讀：

1、什么是 Alphabet？

Our company is operating well today, but we think we can make it cleaner and more accountable. So we are creating a new company, called Alphabet. I am really excited to be running Alphabet as CEO with help from my capable partner, Sergey, as President.

What is Alphabet? Alphabet is mostly a collection of companies. The largest of which, of course, is Google. This newer Google is a bit slimmed down, with the companies that are pretty far afield of our main internet products contained in Alphabet instead. What do we mean by far afield? Good examples are our health efforts: Life Sciences (that works on the glucose-sensing contact lens), and Calico (focused on longevity). Fundamentally, we believe this allows us more management scale, as we can run things independently that aren’t very related.

當(dāng)看到 "Our company is operating well today, but ..."，我想聰明的人應(yīng)該就明白，他的意思實(shí)際是“狀況不咋地”。

接下來(lái)這段寫(xiě)明了Alphabet成立的初衷：“Making the company cleaner and more accountable”。簡(jiǎn)單說(shuō)來(lái)就是：Google越來(lái)越臃腫，里面的辦公室政治無(wú)疑也會(huì)越來(lái)越多，這種情況下，公司成立一個(gè)新的母公司叫 Alphabet。它是一個(gè)集團(tuán)公司，里面包含一系列按照業(yè)務(wù)獨(dú)立出來(lái)的全資子公司，比如 Google，X-Lab，Life Sciences（生產(chǎn)葡萄糖感應(yīng)的隱形眼鏡），Calico（研究如何長(zhǎng)生不老），以及后面他還提到的 Ventures & Capital（Google創(chuàng)投）。

編者注：Calico是谷歌旗下一家關(guān)注基因的高科技公司，研究如何延長(zhǎng)人的壽命和提高身體素質(zhì)的部門(mén)。

我做一個(gè)不太恰當(dāng)?shù)谋确?，這次的新公司成立類(lèi)似兩年前騰訊的組織架構(gòu)調(diào)整， 目的都是：更加清晰地劃分每個(gè)部門(mén)的職能和責(zé)任，每個(gè)事業(yè)部獨(dú)立成為一個(gè)新公司，有自己的CEO和決策層，這樣運(yùn)作更有效率也更加有利于創(chuàng)新。

2、成立 Alphabet 的初衷是？

Alphabet is about businesses prospering through strong leaders and independence. In general, our model is to have a strong CEO who runs each business, with Sergey and me in service to them as needed. We will rigorously handle capital allocation and work to make sure each business is executing well. We'll also make sure we have a great CEO for each business, and we’ll determine their compensation. In addition, with this new structure we plan to implement segment reporting for our Q4 results, where Google financials will be provided separately than those for the rest of Alphabet businesses as a whole.

This new structure will allow us to keep tremendous focus on the extraordinary opportunities we have inside of Google. And it is clear to us and our board that it is time for Sundar to be CEO of Google.

Sergey and I are seriously in the business of starting new things. Alphabet will also include our X lab, which incubates new efforts like Wing, our drone delivery effort. We are also stoked about growing our investment arms, Ventures and Capital, as part of this new structure.

接下來(lái)這段也很重要，說(shuō)了新公司的特別就是讓下面的業(yè)務(wù)能獨(dú)立運(yùn)作。Alphabet的CEO是 Larry Page，董事會(huì)主席為 Sergey Brin，他們主要職責(zé)是為下面的子公司提供盡可能多的幫助，外加分配整個(gè)集團(tuán)的資源以及對(duì)每個(gè)子公司Excutive團(tuán)隊(duì)的績(jī)效評(píng)估等。

新公司在 Q4 的財(cái)報(bào)里會(huì)單獨(dú)給出Google業(yè)務(wù)部的財(cái)報(bào)數(shù)據(jù)，公司其余部分合成一個(gè)財(cái)報(bào)公布。

另外 Alphabet 接下來(lái)還會(huì)不斷將新的業(yè)務(wù)部獨(dú)立出來(lái)成為新的子公司。

3、Alphabet這個(gè)奇葩又酷炫的名字的由來(lái)？

For Sergey and me this is a very exciting new chapter in the life of Google—the birth of Alphabet. We liked the name Alphabet because it means a collection of letters that represent language, one of humanity's most important innovations, and is the core of how we index with Google search! We also like that it means alpha?bet (Alpha is investment return above benchmark), which we strive for! I should add that we are not intending for this to be a big consumer brand with related products—the whole point is that Alphabet companies should have independence and develop their own brands.

Alphabet英語(yǔ)的字面解釋?zhuān)鹤帜副?，按字母排序等。形容詞：alphabetical 是托福和GRE里面第一個(gè)list中必有的單詞，我想大家應(yīng)該都見(jiàn)過(guò)。

字母表是英語(yǔ)（或者拉丁語(yǔ)系）的基礎(chǔ)，所以這里Google的第一層意思是想說(shuō)，我們以后就是你們使用互聯(lián)網(wǎng)的基礎(chǔ)好了。

Google這里的取名還有另外一層意思：將其拆開(kāi)，變成 alpha bet：

1、Alpha就是我們中學(xué)數(shù)學(xué)里面的那個(gè) “阿爾法”，在現(xiàn)代的投資理論（modern portfolio theory）中，alpha表示一個(gè)投資組合相對(duì)于大盤(pán)指數(shù)（比如老美sp500，或者老中的滬深300）在給定時(shí)間內(nèi)的性能優(yōu)勢(shì)。

比如假定一年，看一個(gè)基金的性能：Alpha = 1 表示此基金好過(guò)大盤(pán)指數(shù)1%：也就是說(shuō)你100元買(mǎi)此基金會(huì)比買(mǎi)大盤(pán)指數(shù)（滬深300）多賺1%（-1就是少賺1%）。注意，這里的alpha都是相對(duì)與大盤(pán)指數(shù)而言的，而不是說(shuō)的絕對(duì)回報(bào)。即使alpha=10，在熊市的時(shí)候依然可能會(huì)虧錢(qián)。

2、bet 就是賭注。 德州黨們都知道：每輪下注就是bet。另外還有 raise，call，fold，etc。

這里Alphabet連起來(lái)解釋?zhuān)哼@次的新公司成立和組織調(diào)整，就像是一次回報(bào)高于大盤(pán)的主動(dòng)式下注。大盤(pán)指數(shù)是一種被動(dòng)式理財(cái)?shù)拇?。這里很有意思地可以暗喻之前墨守成規(guī)的老Google，而新的公司 Alphabet 則是代表一種創(chuàng)新，一種更好的回報(bào)。

（你看，英語(yǔ)雖然大部分時(shí)候都非常簡(jiǎn)單直白，但是特定時(shí)候也的確是可以很有深度，很有韻味的。只是中國(guó)大部分媒體讀不透外文里面的這一層精妙含義。）

4、接下來(lái)新公司干嘛？

We are excited about...

Getting more ambitious things done.

Taking the long-term view.

Empowering great entrepreneurs and companies to flourish.

Investing at the scale of the opportunities and resources we see.

Improving the transparency and oversight of what we’re doing.

Making Google even better through greater focus.

And hopefully... as a result of all this, improving the lives of as many people as we can.

這段話，解釋起來(lái)，本質(zhì)就是：

各業(yè)務(wù)線獨(dú)立起來(lái)，明確責(zé)任，取消大鍋飯，讓公司運(yùn)作更加透明，每個(gè)子公司業(yè)務(wù)成績(jī)?nèi)绾我荒苛巳弧?/span>鼓勵(lì)創(chuàng)新，鼓勵(lì)優(yōu)勝劣汰。

這就類(lèi)似于之前美國(guó)的聯(lián)邦制，每個(gè)州自己去定規(guī)矩，自己去管好。歷史證明，州最后的成績(jī)能更好地反映州長(zhǎng)的業(yè)績(jī)，于是州長(zhǎng)和州議員都很積極地去做事，從而使美國(guó)民眾收益。

這里談點(diǎn)我的個(gè)人看法：

這個(gè)話題可以說(shuō)很久，我要醞釀一下，畢竟關(guān)系到Google以后的未來(lái)。

對(duì)這個(gè)問(wèn)題的解讀要回溯到 2008年，當(dāng)時(shí)還是 Eric Schmidt 統(tǒng)治時(shí)代，他當(dāng)時(shí)說(shuō)的一句話讓人印象深刻：

他對(duì)自己任期的表現(xiàn)總體很滿意，最大的不滿來(lái)自于忽視了Facebook的威脅，并任由其做大。之后Google一直就對(duì)Facebook仇視，雖然Facebook很喜歡Google或者至少很中性。之后微軟入股Facebook，這一下子就和Google矛盾正式化。

Facebook里面的工程師一直用Google和Chrome，另外對(duì)于Outlook和Microsoft exchange一直在一種吐槽狀態(tài)。而后Google又有一系列和Facebook在社交上的小打小鬧，比如 Google Buzz等，但都無(wú)傷大雅。

終于，谷歌再也坐不住了。2012年，在我加入Facebook一年之際，Google+ 重磅襲來(lái)。當(dāng)時(shí)整個(gè)Facebook可謂虎軀一震，開(kāi)始lock down 3個(gè)月，然后周末都上班。再之后發(fā)生了N多事情。Vic是Google+的掌門(mén)人，之前Google+的時(shí)候聽(tīng)過(guò)他的不少演講，我個(gè)人覺(jué)得這人不咋地。

現(xiàn)在三年又過(guò)去了，Google+以及 Vic 的結(jié)局大家都能看到。Google也因?yàn)檫@一次的 “Destroy Facebook” 的全民大躍進(jìn)的失敗，元?dú)庥悬c(diǎn)傷，很多牛逼的有自己主見(jiàn)的人才紛紛從Google出走：自己創(chuàng)業(yè)的，或者去新貴 Uber，Airbnb等的。

當(dāng)年Google，以及Google和Facebook的恩怨，還有 Google+ 和 Google Glass 的近況都可以說(shuō)是造成 Google 這次大的調(diào)整的原因。
